First man on moon Neil Armstrong dead at 82

WASHINGTON: Former US astronaut, Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, has died at the age of 82, U.S. media reported on Saturday.
Armstrong underwent a heart-bypass surgery earlier this month, just two days after his birthday on Aug. 5, to relieve blocked coronary arteries.
As commander of the Apollo 11 mission, Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. As he stepped on the moon's dusty surface, Armstrong said: ""That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."
The Apollo 11 moon mission turned out to be Armstrong's last space flight. The following year he was appointed to a desk job, being named NASA's deputy associate administrator for aeronautics in the office of advanced research and technology.
He left NASA a year later to become a professor of engineering at the University of Cincinnati.

PM Ashraf to appear before Supreme Court

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf will appear before the Supreme Court on Monday in the contempt of court case, decided the meeting of the coalition partners chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari.
Leaders of the Pakistan People's Party-led government's coalition partners will accompany the Prime Minister as he presents himself before the apex court.
The decision was made at the high-level meeting of the government's allies presided over by President Asif Ali Zardari here at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Sunday.
According to sources, the coalition partners during the meeting put forth advice that a clash between state institutions should be avoided at all cost.
Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and Law Minister Farooq H Naek also attended the meeting besides leaders of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Awami National Party (ANP).
Earlier, the Prime Minister held a meeting with President Zardari to decide the strategy in connection with the former's appearance before the apex court on Monday.
The Supreme Court last month issued a contempt notice to Prime Minister Ashraf for not implementing its order of writing a letter to the Swiss authorities to reopen a money-laundering case against President Zardari.
PM Ashraf had been asked to appear in person before a five-judge bench headed by Justice Asif Khosa on August 27 to respond to the notice.

He said a day would be fixed to discuss sensitive issues like health and law and order in the assembly and opposition would be taken into confidence in this regard. Answering a question, he said, Zulfiqar Khosa was party's asset and Nawaz Sharif had assured him to address his reservations. He further said, government would neither oppose nor support Dost Mohammed Khosa's personal case. He demanded formation of a national commission to review creation of new provinces. Asim Saleem Bajwa appointed new DG ISPR

 Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Friday has appointed Major General Asim Bajwa as the new director general of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) and spokesman for the Pakistan army.

According to Private TV channel sources, the appointment and transfer orders of related officers have been issued. Major General Athar Abbas, the incumbent of the office, is due to retire in June, 2012.
Meanwhile about 14 Major Generals have been transferred from their offices to different positions.

They include Major General Ghayoor Ahmad, Major General Nadir Zaib, Major General Hadayatur Rehman, Major General Tariq Javed, and Major General Farrakh Bashir while Major General Abaid Bin Zakria, Major General Sajjad Ali Khan, Major General Mazhar Jamil, Major General Sadiq Ali and Major General Ashiq Khataq have also been appointed.

Bajwa was posted in Dera Ismail Khan as a general officer commanding for the past two years. Under Bajwa’s leadership, the army conducted military operations in the South Waziristan tribal region to eliminate militancy and restore peace.

Prior to that, Bajwa served as the deputy military secretary under Pervez Musharraf.

Major General Asim Bajwa will take on responsibilities of the new office after Abbas retirment in June.

Major General Asim Saleem Bajwa was commissioned on 16th Mar 1984 in Punjab Regiment. Has commanded 34 Punjab Regiment and has been the commander of 111 brigade.

He has been chief of Staff of a Corps, Instructor at Command and Staff Course, Brigade Major of Infantry Brigade, Platoon Commander at Pakistan Military Academy. He is a graduate of command and staff college Quetta, NDU Islamabad and Staff College Camberly (UK).

LONDON: British Pakistani boxing star Amir Khan is all set to get engaged with the American Pakistani student Faryal Makhdoom when he gives her the £100,000 three diamond rings on 29th January.
According to The Sun newspaper, the second generation Pakistanis will be swapping the rings in front of 1,000 people at a lavish £150,000 engagement party at Bolton Wanderers' Reebok Stadium where rich footballers such as Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Ricky Hatton, David Haye are just some of people on the guest list.
The love struck couple have strong traditional values, as Faryal, 20, said:" I'm very family oriented even though I was born and raised in New York but my grandparents are in Pakistan - and a lot of my dad's family are there."
"My parents are already treating Amir like a son," she added and that was quite apparent when the bride-to-be's father, Shaukat, and mum Zia gave the couple a BMW 750Li as a gift when the engagement was announced.
The pretty and petite Faryal - just 5ft 3in - has been bowled over by messages of support from Amir's army of fans. "I get a lot of messages from Amir's fans and quite a few say I look like Kate Middleton. That's so nice because so many people admire her and I think she's very stylish - so the comparison is really very flattering for me."
Husband-to-be Amir rushed to praise her too, in an interview with The Sun newspaper, adding: "A lot of girls have said to me, 'Your girl is beautiful' - and that's great because people can be so jealous. But Faryal is so humble. Anybody who meets her is going to fall in love with her. She's got no edge, she's just a terrific person."
Faryal will be flying to England on Friday for their engagement party and spend a week here where Amir will be taking her out to show her around Bolton.
"I'm going to introduce her to a pasty barm, fish and chips - maybe even an ice cream if she's lucky!" Amir said jokingly. "I might also try to squeeze in a Bolton match just so that she cans see the venue before the big day - and make sure she likes it."
Faryal revealed how their relationship was almost teetering on the edges initially as she had a lot of trouble understanding Amir's broad Bolton accent.
"In the beginning I really couldn't understand him. I was used to London accents and thought that's how everyone spoke in Britain. But when Amir opened his mouth it was as if he was speaking a foreign tongue - so I just used to nod, agree with whatever he was talking about and say, 'Yeah'.
"He'd say things like 'daft' and 'innit' and I had no idea what they meant. He'd say, 'Don't be daft!' - and I'd be wondering what 'daft' was supposed to be!" But she broke down the language barrier when she visited Amir's family at their home in Bolton and spent five days meeting his nieces, nephews and cousins. Speaking of the future Amir said: "I know New York is an amazing city but our future lies in Bolton - she can't wait to live there!"

Pakistan plane crash: 127 feared dead

RAWALPINDI: A Bhoja Airline flight # B4-213 has reportedly crashed near Chaklala airbase, Geo News reported. According to sources, the a Boeing 737 with 127 passengers on board, which flew from Karachi at 5:00 PM was suppose to land in Islamabad at 6:40 PM, but crashed just before touchdown. According to sources in Civil Aviation Authority, the flight was given clearance to land but it lost contact with the control tower minutes before the crash reports. Ministry of Defence and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) have confirmed the reports of crash. Inclement weather has been held responsible for the crash. Rescue teams including Pakistan army personnel have rushed to the crash site. More details are yet awaited. In July 2010, an Airbus 321 passenger jet operated by the private airline Airblue crashed into hills overlooking Islamabad while coming in to land after a flight from Karachi, killing 152 people on board.

Avalanche tragedy — Foreign rescuers arrive in Giari in harsh weather

ISLAMABAD: 

While the harsh weather persisted, rescue efforts have been stepped up at the site of the avalanche near the Siachen Glacier as teams from the US, Germany and Switzerland have arrived in Giari to assist the military.      

A spokesman for the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Thursday that members of the US team would survey the site on Friday where a wall of snow crashed into a Pakistan Army camp on Saturday, burying 138 people, to assess the nature of the work required and equipment needed.

Teams from China and Norway were also expected to reach the incident site in the next 24-48 hours, the military said.

Talking to The Express Tribune, ISPR Director-General Major-General Athar Abbas said that although the chances of finding the trapped men alive were remote, but he was still optimistic. Due to the boulders and soft snow, sometimes holes and air pockets occur in the avalanche that helps the air pass through. And if that happened in our case, then I am still hoping that we would find some people alive.”

Rescue operations

Another “priority point” (point number six) has been added to the previously five identified points in search of the 138 buried — of which 127 were soldiers of the 6 Northern Light Infantry Battalion and 11 civilian employees including waiters, barbers and a tailor.

According to the ISPR, 15 heavy machines which include dumpers, dozers, excavators and loaders are working at the search site at present.

Up to 115-foot deep excavation has been carried out at point one and work would start at a 130-foot long horizontal tunnel with a diameter of three meters to gain access to the accommodation area. At point two, excavation work has gone down to 100 feet.

The weather continued to be harsh and unpredictable, posing operational and administrative difficulties for both men and machines busy in the rescue operation. The Meteorological Department has forecast more snowfall in Siachen for Friday.
